The interior design project for the Altis Belém Hotel & Spa was the work of the firm FSSMGN Arquitectos Ldª., together with the general architectural design, which was the responsibility of the firm RISCO S.A.
The intervention of another design team on the interior design level allowed for the coordination of building and spatial solutions in the design phase and the articulation of these solutions in terms of the work.
The design intervention consisted of the interior design proposal for all the hotel’s public spaces, as well as the design of equipment and fixed furniture and the choice and design of the furnishing elements that were considered necessary for the overall harmonisation of the public use spaces.
The aim of the interior design intervention was to define a coherent overall ambience that would make it possible to identify the hotel as a cohesive structure with a unique character.
Following the suggested theme of the Portuguese discoveries, the design team sought to transfer to contemporary atmospheres and forms a number of iconographic suggestions, matters and colour schemes identified through study of the period, as well as the themes of travel and return from travel.
The identification of the period of the discoveries with the absolute cosmopolitanism of a country whose only border was the sea, the passage from this cosmopolitan attitude to the stone of the Tower of Belém, so close by, and the recognised consequences of the results of a journey in an openness to new aesthetic attitudes were the inspiration for formalising a contemporary spatial proposal.
The design project was developed in a number of areas with distinct character and with diverse contexts and iconographic references, which included defining the thematic and formal contents for all the publicly used areas of the hotel, including the outdoor café areas and circulation zones.
As the public use areas – reception, lounge, sitting areas, cafeteria, restaurant and spa, as well as the rooms and suites – are more strongly characterised in terms of a spec-ific identity and ambience, all the adjacent circulation and support spaces were likewise treated as an element of contextualisation for the creation of a unitary atmosphere.|
